Why is suicide wrong? - Happy Science's Suicide Prevention Activities

(Last Update:

In connection with the WHO World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, the week from September 10 to 16 is designated as "Suicide Prevention Week" by the Cabinet Office.
Currently, in Japan, more than 20,000 people take their own lives each year.
And there are many times more people, such as family and friends, who are deeply suffering.
Happy Science is working on activities to reduce suicide from a spiritual perspective.

"Let's Reduce Suicide Campaign"

Happy Science has been conducting the "Let's Reduce Suicide Campaign" nationwide since 2003 to eliminate unhappiness caused by suicide.
Volunteers from among the believers hold up campaign banners in front of stations and call on passersby to prevent suicide, or hand out suicide prevention leaflets.
Now, this activity has spread to branches overseas.

Q&A about Suicide

Generally, it is said that "suicide is wrong", but why is it wrong? We will answer questions about suicide from the perspective of Happy Science's Buddhist Truth.

Q1. I want to commit suicide to feel better.

A1. Unfortunately, the suffering will not disappear.

Even if the human body is gone, the soul continues to live.
Even if you commit suicide thinking everything will disappear, the suffering remains.
Moreover, you cannot go to heaven or hell until your original lifespan ends, and you will continue to see the sadness of those left behind.
Therefore, please never commit suicide.

Q2. It's my life, so I should be free to die, right?

A2. Human life is given by God and Buddha.

Some people say, "I didn't want to be born" or "My parents gave birth to me without my consent."
But in reality, we were all born because we asked God and Buddha to be born on earth and were granted permission.
Before being born, we make a "life plan" and promise to meet people who will become our parents, partners, and friends on earth.
Suicide means abandoning this promise unilaterally.

Q3. I can't find any value in living.

A3. Let's remember the things you were praised for.

Everyone is a precious being created by God and Buddha.
When you lack confidence in yourself, try to remember each thing you were praised for by others.
In your future life, encounters with people who promised to be born with you are waiting.
For those people as well, please cherish a heart that affirms yourself.

Q4. Living is unbearably painful.

A4. Receive the light of God and Buddha and cut off the influence of evil spirits.

When you are obsessed with the thought "I really want to die", there is the influence of evil spirits.
People who died by suicide become restless spirits and possess people with similar mindsets, trying to make them commit suicide as well.
The most effective way to cut off such evil influences is to read the fundamental scripture of Happy Science, 'The Dharma of the Right Mind' (the most important scripture given to believers), or play the CD of 'The Dharma of the Right Mind' and be protected by the light of God and Buddha.
Also, to avoid resonating with evil spirits, let's brighten our hearts and learn Buddhist Truth, even a little every day.
